| Can Relais Enterprise or Relais Express post PDF documents to a website? | Enterprise and Express both include Post to Web PDF as a delivery option. After a document is scanned, the application automatically converts the scanned image to PDF format, creates a cover page for the document with request information, posts the document to a web site with a randomly generated file name and sends the requester a link to the document via email. If you would like a sample document send to you via Post to Web PDF, contact info@relais-intl.com | N/A |
 |
| We already have a scanner; can we use it with Relais Express or Relais Enterprise? | Yes, although Relais scanning was originally developed for the Fujitsu 3096EX using the Kofax tool kit, to allow support for special features available with Fujitsu's image processing card such as auto separation of text and photo, both Enterprise and Express can now be used with a variety of scanners through TWAIN drivers. Examples include the Minolta PS 3000 and PS 7000 cradle scanners. The specific features available depend on the scanner that you are using. Click here for a list of some of the scanners that can be used with Relais and Relais Express. To confirm whether your scanner is available with Relais software contact info@relais-intl.com
| N/A |
 |
| Can we buy only the Relais Express software? | Yes. There are several purchase options available for Relais Express: software only, complete workstation including hardware and software or software with hardware components
| N/A |
 |
| Can patrons make requests from the OPAC and have them load into Relais without rekeying? | Many web based OPACs include a requesting mechanism. Typically this produces a flat file of requests that can then be sent to Relais by email. Check with your local ILS system administrator to confirm if this is possible. | N/A |
 |
| What if the requested document cannot be supplied? | As well as scanning and loan tracking, Relais provides many options for responding to requests in other ways. For example, to indicate that a document is Not on the Shelf or Is at the Bindery. When staff selects one of these options, a message is automatically sent to the requester. | N/A |
 |
| Can staff check on the status of a request? | Each step in the life of a request is date and time stamped within Relais. Staff can query the request database using a number of search criteria, including:
· Date submitted
· Title keyword
· Author keyword
· Requesting library code
Once the request is retrieved a complete audit trail is displayed, so that staff may review its exact status.
| N/A |
 |
| Do I have to make a photocopy of a document before I scan it? | If you are using the modified Fujitsu scanner, it is a flat bed and staff can scan directly from the original publication. The benefits of this are:
· Better quality output - no interim step
· Less time consuming - one less step for staff
· Cheaper - no costly paper copy that is thrown away
| N/A |
 |
| Does scanning take longer than photocopying? | The Relais Scanning workstation was designed in a high volume production environment. As a result a series of time saving devices are part of the package.
· Landscape orientation. Documents are scanned using a landscape rather than portrait orientation. This translates into a shorter scan time for each page scanned. Relais rotates the images before delivery.
· Photo/text separation. The Relais Scanning Workstation includes an image-processing card that automatically separates text and photograph on the same page and applies different scanning algorithms. This means that each page need only be scanned once and staff does not need to make a decision on a page-by-page basis on whether or not to use 'dither'.
· Request number. Entry of a Relais request number creates a link between the image and the database containing the requester information. Once scanned the document is automatically delivered to the address specified in the | N/A |
 |
| What is the quality of the document the requester receives? | By default the Relais Scanning Workstation scans at 300 dpi (dots per inch). This is the quality that libraries are familiar with from Ariel. In contrast the average fax machine scans and prints at 200 X 100 dpi. The automatic separation of photo and text also provides optimum quality and legibility no matter what the content of the page.
| N/A |
 |
| Can I see the document as I scan it?
| Yes. Most of the user interface is reserved for the operator to view the document as it is scanned. This gives an opportunity to check the quality and completeness of each page as it is processed and if necessary make corrections to the scanned image.
| N/A |
 |
| Can I remove black borders from the document before I send it? | Yes. One of the scanning options is black border removal. When this is enabled, the document is scanned without a black border. The result is a cleaner image, a smaller file size and less toner used when the document is printed.
| N/A |
 |
| Can I insert, delete and replace pages in the scanned document? | Yes. While scanning a document, staff can edit what has been done. Missing pages may be inserted and incorrect pages may be deleted or replaced.
| N/A |
 |
| How can I delete a scanned document that has not been delivered yet? | To prevent a scanned document from being delivered, force the delivery process to fail by deleting the image file.
All scanned images are stored in the Relais\Scanner\ folder and are named based on the associated request number. Example: For request number REG-10000010, the corresponding image is REG10000010.TIF.
Open the folder, select the image file and delete it. When the appropriate delivery application is started, this request will go into the Failed Queue because the application cannot find an image. The next time you process the requests in the Failed Queue, this request will be displayed. Click Skip Delivery to remove the request permanently from the delivery queue.
| N/A |
 |
| When the cover sheet prints, the header and footer text is cut off. How do I prevent this? | Be sure that the printer that is printing the cover sheets is using a PCL 5e print driver. | N/A |
 |
| Can I use Relais Express with the Minolta PS 3000 or PS 7000 scanners? | Yes. In order for the Relais Express software to work with the PS 3000 or PS 7000 you need a SCSI card and the correct TWAIN driver from Minolta. You can download the driver from the Minolta web site. For the PS 3000 the link is: http://www.minoltausa.com/main.asp?productID=776&whichProductSection=1&whichSection=5 select the category Business Products and select the product: MS 2000/MS 3000/PS 3000 or PS 7000 From there you can download the driver. | N/A |

| Can I send to an Ariel workstation outside our firewall? | Express can be setup either inside or outside the firewall. If inside then you have to open up port 419 so that Express can communicate with Ariel. Ariel must also be setup as Store & Forward in order to receive documents from Express (that needs to be done either way). | N/A |
 |
| DeliveryFTP produces this error when sending to a specific Ariel machine.
'Server Response Error: Downloading File for Request Number: ........
Code: 552 Desc.: 552 Transfer aborted: disk full'
| The message indicates the response of the server at the other end. Several conditions will cause this message:
1. The Ariel machine at other end is full. Ariel is limited to 100 documents in its queue, when this limit is reached, it accepts no more.
2. The disk drive of the Ariel machine is full and Ariel is no longer accepting transmissions.
3. This message is also displayed when the receiving Ariel machine is busy sending documents to other destinations.

 |
| After adding a tif document in Scanner, the delivered image is rotated the wrong way. | The delivery applications scan the first page in the tif image. It then decides if rotation is needed. If so, all pages in the tif image are rotated the same. So, all pages must be in the same format as the first. To deliver the document anyway, just delete the first page from within Scanner. | N/A |
 |
| Does the Fujitsu color scanner fi-4750C work with Relais Express. | Yes. The current version of Relais Express (ver 3.2) supports this scanner using the TWAIN interface.
We are also working to make this scanner functional using a Kofax Engine. This will allow our software to interface seamlessly with the scanner and provide image processing features like black border removal, despeckle etc... at a greater speed.

| Does Relais come with a run time version of Access or does it have to be purchased separately? | Relais Express comes with a run time version of Access. MS Access does not need to be purchased separately. | N/A |
 |
| Does the "store and forward" feature work both ways from Ariel to Relais and from Relais to Ariel? | Store and Forward is used by Ariel™ to circumvent firewall related issues encountered by some libraries. Email delivery can also be used as a way to send documents to requesters that have firewall restrictions. Three email delivery methods are available and each of these is supported by Relais Express: i) Email to Ariel™ ii) Email with post to web delivery of the document iii) Email with document as an attachment Relais Express can receive documents sent from a Store and Forward station. When sending a document to a requester whose Ariel™ workstation is behind a firewall and so a Store and Forward station is needed, one of the above mentioned options can be used as an alternate means of delivery. | N/A |
 |
| Why can't I remove a user from Relais? | The user may have requests still associated with it, if the database has not gone through a purge cycle.
One option is to purge the database of old requests.
Another option is to run the following script:
update id_delivery set access_user='SYSTEM' where access_user='OLDUSER';
update id_audit set access_user='SYSTEM' where access_user='OLDUSER';
delete from id_access_user where access_user='OLDUSER';

| What printer card do you recommend for document printing on an HP platform and whom should I contact to order? | Relais International Inc. has recommended the XipPrint II Acceleration boards for HP printers designed by GGX. It has been brought to our attention that these boards may no longer be available due to the following. i-data International inc. acquired GGX and its product line a couple of years ago and was selling and supporting the XipPrint products. Unfortunately In September 2002 i-data International, the parent company went into bankruptcy and consequently so did i-data Inc. soon afterwards. Although some of the business units of i-data International were acquired by MPI Technologies, the company from which this information was obtained, this acquisition did not include the GGX products, These still lie with the bankrupt i-data International Inc. and hence MPI technologies are not in a position to provide any support on these products. | N/A |

| There are more and more libraries changing to store and forward addresses for security purposes. Is there any word on when Relais will be able to send to one of these addresses? | This issue was recorded many versions ago but unfortunately was, and still is outside Relais' control.
The ability to send to an Ariel store and forward address through another Ariel store and forward station was an RLG licensing issue which is now an Infotrieve licensing issue.
When Infotrieve purchased Ariel from RLG Relais once again opened communication to see if they would permit us to send directly to an Ariel address without the need to go through a store and forward workstation.
RLG said NO as the code was considered proprietary and they were unwilling to pursue discussion re a royalty
arrangement. Infotrieve has yet to respond to Clare's messages. | N/A |

| Additional notes do not appear in a GSM notification message. | The additional notes function is working by design. Additional notes will be communicated to the client and then removed from the ID_DELIVERY.additional_notes field as we may send another message to the client or supplier through the ILL Message Handler at a later date and do not want to pick up the same notes from the previous transmission which may no longer apply. The additional notes are stored as a permanent record in the audit record and are displayed on the Query screen as noted. | N/A |

 |
| Why is patron information showing on requests going to external libraries? | Your external supplier is receiving a pick sheet with the patron's information at the top because your delivery application is using the Request.rpt report and should be using the SupplierRequest.rpt report.
These are not the regular delivery applicaitons in your Deliver Requests section of the requestflow, they are the Borrowing Request delivery applications in your requestflow. Also, please note that Delivery Fax Server does not read the Wait Time, and only one can be run at a time on one machine. If you have an external supplier that is using a messaging method of fax, please consider using email, or mail and manually fax the pick sheet until we resolve this issue. | N/A |

| Does Relais send out notices for loaned material, e.g., overdues, recalls, renewal requests, by email? | Yes. For ISO ILL transactions and for requests sent and received in generic script format, follow up notices for returnable items are sent and received in the same format. In addition, for requests that are received in non standard format all notices are sent via email if there is an email address for messaging registered for the library in Relais. | N/A |

| If you are planning on upgrading to Oracle 10g please read the following. | Firstly, if you did not know already, the Microsoft ODBC driver is slightly faster than the Oracle ODBC driver, and so it is always recommended to use Microsoft over Oracle for the Relais ODBC DSN (yes I said it). Microsoft MDAC 2.8 does not support Oracle versions later than 8i ( http://support.microsoft.com/?id=244661), although it works fine with Oracle 9i.
1) Update the following registry key with the following information
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSDTC\MTxOCI] 'OracleXaLib'='oraclient10.dll' 'OracleSqlLib'='orasql10.dll' 'OracleOciLib'='oci.dll'
For mass distribution, I suggest the creation of a *.reg file that can be run on each machine
2) Make sure your Windows environment variable “Path” includes the Oracle 10g bin directory as the default Oracle 10g “Instant Client” install does not add this variable, but the “Custom” install does

| Why do my Relais 4.1 format flat files no longer load in Relais 4.6 Load Request? | The new Relais Express 4.6 MR1 Load Request application has been updated to look for both a carrige return (0D) and line feed (0A) at the end of each line in the text flat file. All the data elements and field positions in the flat file have remained constant. In the following example, I have placed in the carriage return and line feeds in to show their position, but this is not visible text.
Old 4.1 flat file:

| After we upgraded to 4.6 MR2 our delivery applications are sending out cover pages with large fonts. | As mentioned in the 4.6 MR2 'Relais Help.chm' file's first page of what's new, the delivery application's default report has been switched from Request.rpt to RequestText.rpt. So if you have a delivery application that is pointing to Request.rpt or blank it must be updated to point to RequestText.rpt. | N/A |
 |
| Why does ILL Message Handler or Load Request crash or freeze on the Relais Enterprise Application Server? | We have found an issue with our high volume Enterprise users (>~50K requests/year, >~50 Requestflow rules) where the ILL Message Handler and Load Request applications should be run with debug mode turned off as there is too much data being written to the log files. This data consists mostly of the Requestflow rules test results, and when writing to the log files, will greatly slow down the application server, even if these two applications are run on separate servers. Debug mode can be turned on when needed to analyze a specific issue. | N/A |

| How does Relais handle publisher encrypted PDF documents when doing post-to-web delivery? | When a PDF document is encrypted by the publisher Relais can deliver the document but cannot modify it prior to delivery. This means the Relais cover page cannot be merged with the PDF document, the two must be sent separately. If the encryption cannot be removed from the PDF document, it and the cover page can be sent as attachments using Relais Delivery Email where Merge Cover page option is set to No. | N/A |

| What types of scanners does Relais work with? | Relais can use any TWAIN scanner (the scan operator will utilize the TWAIN interface pop-up within the Relais Scanner application). Relais can also use any scanner that is capable of connecting through the Kofax Adrenaline series of cards without the need of a popup-interface, the scan operator will directly use the Relais Scanner application. For a list of Kofax Adrenaline compatible scanners, please see the Kofax website's scanner configuration at http://scadmin.kofax.com/KCSearch/ | N/A |
